Fontaines D.C. — consisting of Grian Chatten, Carlos O’Connell, Conor Curley, Conor Deegan, and Tom Coll — will release their fifth album, titled*Dopamine Chamber*(on XL Recordings), on October 16. James Ford produced the album.
The album is the follow-upto *Romance*, released in 2024, which went platinum in the United Kingdom. The new material marks a clear departure from the raw, guitar-driven sound of the band’s early years, in favor of the most sensual and captivating compositions they have created to date.
The first single promoting the album is the song “Marianne.” The entire album combines powerful ballads with catchy, uplifting melodies that emerge from a dark atmosphere. The album explores the theme of seeking pleasure in a world heading toward crisis and asks what that search says about us. As vocalist Grian Chatten sums it up: “This album functions like the titular dopamine chamber. You step inside, and we test songs on you that are meant to alter your mood and state of mind.”
Fontaines D.C. never record the same thing twice. Over the course of five albums, they’ve continually evolved—starting with*Dogrel*(2019) and*A Hero’s Death*(2020), through the hitalbum *Skinty Fia*(2022), which reached No. 1 on the charts in the UK and Ireland, all the way tothewild, colorful*Romance*(2024).
*Dopamine Chamber*is their boldest and most surprising shift in direction. The band recorded the album with producer James Ford in London, in the English countryside, and in Palermo—where lead singer Grian Chatten sang in a makeshift booth made of pillows and mattresses.
As Chatten explains: “I have a strong sense that we are on the threshold of a completely new phase—a new form of what it means to be human.”
On their fifth album, Fontaines D.C. have created their own “chamber.” How this will affect the listener will be the main experiment.
Fontaines D.C. supports War Child UK. €1 from every ticket sold (after applicable taxes) will help War Child protect, educate, and defend the rights of children affected by war.
